The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa™ (RAGBRAI) will start its 43rd tour in Sioux City in 2015, and in preparation for the festivities, RAGBRAI sponsored a Kids’ Art Contest for the route communities.
Students in grades k-5 that attend Sioux City Community Schools, Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools, St. Paul Lutheran and Siouxland Community Christian School were asked to participate by submitting individual artwork that incorporates Sioux City’s theme – Sioux City: Party Like It’s 1973!
One local winner was submitted into the statewide contest through which an overall winner will receive a grand prize of $350!
Today, the Sioux City RAGBRAI committee announced the art contest winners at each level. Winners received a $10 gift card to Palmer’s Candy Company:
- 6 Year Old – Madalyn Johnson from Clark Elementary
- 8 Year Old – Abby Demers from Holy Cross St. Michael Center
- 10 Year Old & Overall Winner – Jashua Grima from Loess Hills Elementary
- 11 Year Old – Kaitlyn George from Sunnyside Elementary
Judge’s Choice – Shelby Edwardson, an 11 year old from Riverside Elementary
A number of art projects were submitted for committee consideration. “It was difficult to select one overall winner to represent Sioux City in the statewide contest,” said Kim Gordon, publicity chairperson for Sioux City’s RAGBRAI committee, adding, “but we felt Jashua beautifully depicted our theme and biking.”
All entry’s will be on display at the downtown Wilbur Aalfs Library now through the RAGBRAI ride.
Jashua Grima (below) was the overall winner and his entry will be submitted into the statewide contest. The statewide art contest winner will be announced in June.
