To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI), which starts in Sioux City on July 23, a local theatre will host four showings of “Shift: The RAGBRAI Documentary” on July 22.

The Riviera Theater at City Centre will feature showings at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m., and 5 p.m. Approximately one hour in length, the film is directed by Des Moines Register journalists Courtney Crowder and Kelsey Kremer. It follows three riders and a pair of
community leaders as they reach new personal heights, changing their lives in seven days and finding themselves—literally and metaphorically—in the middle of nowhere.

“It was important to us to tell a story that honors the ride but appeals to more than just bike riders or Iowans,” said Kremer. “This documentary explores the people who ride, the towns that host, and the space RAGBRAI offers riders to sift through life’s joy and challenges along the way. It’s a movie that is about RAGBRAI, but it’s also a movie that is for everyone.”

The oldest, largest, and longest recreational touring bicycle ride in the world, RAGBRAI will begin in Sioux City on July 23 and travel on to Storm Lake, Carroll, Ames, Des Moines, Tama/Toledo, Coralville, and eventually Davenport by July 29. This year’s milestone event is expected to bring over 25,000 riders, along with their support teams, representing all 50 states and countries around the globe.

Along with four screenings in Sioux City, additional showings of “Shift: The RAGBRAI Documentary” will be featured in other towns along the RAGBRAI route. Watch the trailer here.
