Sioux City RAGBRAI Pre-ride to honor former bike club president

frank_bSioux City’s RAGBRAI® RIDE RIGHT committee will hold a pre-ride inspection of the official RAGBRAI route on Sunday, May 31, in honor of a local Sioux City man, Frank Brinkerhoff, who passed away on last year’s RAGBRAI ride near Mason City, Iowa.

The memorial ride will be led by Frank Brinkerhoff’s wife and daughter and will start at 7 a.m. at the boat ramp near the Hilton Garden Inn. The ride will end in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Transportation back from Storm Lake will be provided by the Mr. Cat’s team bus. The cost will be $10 and you must RSVP by calling Dick Billings at 712-239-0319 or by emailing dick.billings@billingsco.com. The RIDE RIGHT committee conducts a pre-ride inspection of the RAGBRAI route each year to check for cracks, rough shoulders or anything else that might be dangerous to riders. Once the route has been inspected, the committee will note any potential hazards and alert the Department of Transportation to ensure any possible upgrades can be made in time for the event. This information also gets included in the Road Conditions Report that is sent to RAGBRAI.

George “Frank” Brinkerhoff was 74 when he passed away. He was an avid cyclist and enjoyed countless hours biking across the United States. Frank’s passion for cycling was evident as he was the president of Siouxland Cyclists, a cycling club founded in 1982, and promoted bicycling by giving bikes to children.

Sioux City RAGBRAI Sponsorships Sought

The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI®) will start its 2015 tour in Sioux City on July 19, and in preparation for the festivities Sioux City RAGBRAI is searching for sponsors to help make this year’s event a success.

Sponsoring RAGBRAI will put your business right in the heart of all the action outdoors at the Tyson Events Center on July 18 during the RAGBRAI expo and entertainment events.

From stage signage to main gate signage along with volunteer t-shirts, your business will be seen by tens of thousands of people from Sioux City and all over the world.

Many sponsorship levels include logo and name mentions in RAGBRAI advertisements such as television, radio, newspaper, billboards and social media. Sponsorships also include Huey Lewis & the News VIP tickets. The VIP tickets include VIP parking, a premium viewing area, private bathrooms and a private bar.

If you are interested in sponsoring Sioux City’s RAGBRAI event or would like additional information, please contact Melissa Lanzourakis or Jim Braunschweig.

The sponsorship brochure can be downloaded here.

RAGBRAI is the largest and oldest bike-touring event in the country, and is expected to draw more than 20,000 overnight visitors to Sioux City this summer.

Kids invited to participate in RAGBRAI coloring contest

The Des Moines Register newspaper hosts a bicycle ride across our state each year. The name of the ride, RAGBRAI®, stands for the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa. On July 18, thousands of people on bicycles will be visiting our town and spending the night here. Our town is sponsoring an art contest for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. A winner in each grade will be chosen. The winning entry in each grade will win a gift card to Palmer Candy Company.

Those selected winning entries will move on and be considered for the overall Sioux City winner. The overall Sioux City winning artwork will then be judged with all the other winning entries of other overnight towns in Iowa. The statewide grand prize is $350. We hope you can capture the fun of having thousands of bikes and people visiting our town.

The Rules:

• Sioux City’s theme, “Party Like it’s 1973” should be incorporated into the art.

• Artwork can be no larger than 11” x 14”.

• The artwork can be drawings (crayon, maker, pencil, etc.); paintings (finger paints, watercolors, etc.); or sculpture (clay, paper mache, etc.)

• All entries will be used for decoration for Sioux City’s RAGBRAI®

• Put your name, age, address, school and phone number on the back of your entry.

• Deadline for all entries is 4 p.m., Friday, May 15.

Please mail or drop off entries between 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. at JD Gordon Design – 312 Court St., Sioux City, IA 51101.

RAGBRAI Needs Residents to Host Riders

UPDATE: Applications for private housing are now closed. Public campgrounds are available to those who still need a place to stay.

CAMPGROUNDS: Click here to find information on campgrounds.

More than 2,000 cyclists and their teams will need private camping or private residences to stay when they arrive in Sioux City on July 17-18 for the 43rd RAGBRAI.

The ride across Iowa takes riders from town to town, staying in overnight host towns along the way. However, many riders prefer to stay in private homes or on private property. Hosting a space for RAGBRAI gives the property owner a unique opportunity to meet people from around the United States or even from around the world.

The Sioux City RAGBRAI housing committee is looking for Volunteers to host a person/group in their home or to provide space for a tent, motorhome or RV. Hosts are not required to entertain, feed, or transport riders. The committee does request that hosts provide toilet facilities, shower, and space to sleep. RAGBRAI hosts are not allowed to charge for accommodations.

All of the vehicles and individuals who will be staying with the host are required to have a valid RAGBRAI numbered wristband or vehicle ID.

Volunteers needed to help at RAGBRAI kickoff

Hundreds of volunteers are needed to help with the 2015 RAGBRAI kickoff in Sioux City.

Every year the ride attracts more than 20,000 cyclists to the starting town, where thousands of riders depart for a seven-day ride across Iowa.

This year’s ride begins in Sioux City on July 19, and riders will arrive in Sioux City on July 17-18. Volunteers are needed for many different roles, including but not limited to assisting in information booths, directing traffic, answering questions for travelers and much more.

To volunteer, fill out the form below.

Share your contact information, and we'll be in touch about how you can help make RAGBRAI's Sioux City kickoff awesome.
